Tour itinerary

Day 1-2

La Paz city, Witch market, Teleferiko cable car

We arrive in La Paz, one of the highest mountainous cities in the world 3600 meters above sea level. After meeting the tour leader and the group, we check into a hotel. We breathe in the thin air, admire the views of buildings adjoining the slopes of the canyon, and explore the busy streets. In one of the local restaurants we will enjoy the most famous local dishes - squash stew locro, meat and butter stew fricassee and saltenas, savory pastries of meat and vegetables.

Let`s walk to the witch market, one of the most famous places in Bolivia. Here we will taste the famous coca leaf tea. It is sweet with bitter notes, and the effect is invigorating, like strong coffee. Various potions, amulets and talismans can be seen on the shelves, but dried llama embryos are considered the most lively commodity. Many Bolivians believe that during the construction of a house, this is exactly the kind of sacrifice that must be made to the goddess Pachamama. They bury the embryo under the foundation, believing it to bring good luck.

We examine the unique geography of the city from the cable car Teleferiko. For locals, this is the most common public transport.  We float in the clouds!

Day 3

Altiplano region, The town of Uyuni

In the morning we leave for the town of Uyuni, the gateway to the famous salt flats of Bolivia. Today we start exploring the Altiplano region. A long road awaits us - about 8 hours by bus, with stops for lunch and rest. We will arrive in Uyuni late in the afternoon.

We are literally at the end of geography. There is no further road, because Uyuni is located on the edge of the Altiplano, a wilderness near the Andes ridge, stretching for hundreds of kilometers towards the border with Argentina and Chile.

We check into a cozy hotel. This evening we especially recommend a hot shower - we might not have the opportunity for the next few days.

Day 4

Salar de Uyuni salt flat, Abandoned locomotives cemetery, Fish island

We continue our tour of Bolivia by traveling to Salar de Uyuni. On the way, we will stop at the steam locomotive cemetery to see thousands of carriages of abandoned locomotives on a huge field. Here you feel like the hero of the "Mad Max" movie, or a a post-apocalyptic novel.

We reach the Bolivian miracle, Salar de Uyuni salt flat. It occupies more than 10 thousand square kilometers, which is 5 times the area of the state of Luxembourg! Admire the endless sky meeting the plain - a mesmerizing sight. It is impossible to resist taking hundreds of photos here.

The largest salt flat in the world even has two islands. We will visit one of them, the Fish island to see huge cactuses that grow here up to 10 meters. We can also take a small trek and reach the top of the hill in about 20 minutes.
