Tour itinerary

Day 1

The city of Kuching, Seafood food court

We arrive in Kuala Lumpur and change to a flight to Kuching. We check into a hotel near the river and go for a walk. Like almost any other Malaysian city, Kuching boasts a unique blend of different peoples and cultures. Malay, Indian, Chinese, British and other peoples have been living here at different times and have left their mark on the local cuisine and architecture.

First we walk on the river front and then get to the famous seafood food court, which is undoubtedly one of the best in the world. Countries of this region are well known for their street food, but just few places on the planet can boast a similar food variety! Here we will enjoy shrimps, cuttlefishes, octopuses, sea cucumbers – not to mention dozens of fish species.

Day 2

Bako national park

In the morning we head to the Bako National Park. We leave Kuching on the bus, and then we have take a boat. Bako is like a miniature Borneo. It boasts small area all the landscapes existing on the island: beaches, rocks, grasslands, swamps and mangroves.

Bako is famous for its fauna. Crocodiles, crab-eating macaques, surilis, monitor lizards, plantain squirrels and more than 150 species of birds live here. Some animals can not be seen anywhere outside Borneo, like bearded pigs, who have long bristle on their snouts, and long-nosed monkeys, males of which have large red noses and pot bellies. The park also hosts a variety of carnivorous plants which consume insects.

We will explore the park, walking along hiking trails, and come back to Kuching for the night.

Day 3-5

Gunung Mulu National Park, Deer Cave, Night walk in the jungle

We fly to the Gunung Mulu National Park and check into a simple guesthouse near a river. Gunung Mulu is a unique place on Borneo! It’s separated from the inhabited part of the island by mountains and jungles, so you can get there either by plane or by river at certain period of the year.

Gunung Mulu is famous for its enormous caves. We will visit the Deer Cave, known as the world’s largest cave passage. It is as high as a forty-story house! We walk along this gigantic corridor and enjoy absolute silence, which is broken only by sounds of waterfalls dropping down from the cave ceiling. We watch underground rivers flowing through one of the world’s longest underground systems – the Clearwater Cave.

We go hiking through the jungle, walk along canopies between trunks of giant trees and swim in the crystal clear water of forest rivers. Gunung Mulu is a home for more than 20 thousand animal species. In the daytime you may see hornbills, silvery gibbon, Javan pangolins. In the evening clouds of bats emerge from caves to hunt, and Bornean swifts and swallows fly into the grottoes to take their places – in the morning the reverse occurs.

After sunset nocturnal jungle inhabitants appear: spiders, centipedes and stick insects. The darkness is filled with amazing sounds: crickets of dozens of species chirp and frogs croak. We will take a night walk and go through jungle with torches.

On the last day we fly to the town of Miri on the Borneo coast and spend the night in a hotel.
