Day 1

Penang island Nasi lemak ayam

We arrive in Singapore and board a flight to Penang island in Malaysia (1 hour flight). We check into a hotel in the center of the historic city of Georgetown, have some rest and head to the popular evening food court. Let our food tour to Malaysia and Singapore begin!

Penang is recognized as one of the culinary capitals of the world. The food here is cultivated, newspapers regularly write about popular dishes and eateries, and a mixture of Chinese, Indian and Malay traditions creates a unique variety of tastes. 

Today we will get acquainted with the most popular dish of Peranakan cuisine Baba Nyonya - a symbiosis of Malay and Chinese cuisine. The dish is called nasi lemak ayam and consists of fried chicken, anchovies, spicy sauce, cucumbers, an egg, and fragnant rice cooked in coconut milk. This dish is so popular that in Malaysia, culinary competitions are held every year to prepare the most delicious nasi lemak ayam. Full and satisfied, we walk around the old city, admiring Chinese traditional shop houses.

Day 2

Locals always begin their morning with roti - the thinnest flatbread made of wheat dough. There are many variations - from roti canai which is served with dal, to roti with with bananas, fish, chicken, eggs, or condensed milk. This dish came to Malaysia from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, and roti canai means bread from Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. When enjoying your roti, order teh tarik, a national drink of Malaysia made of strong black tea with condensed milk and hot water. A thick frothy top is formed when the mixture is poured back and forth repeatedly between two vessels from a height.

Head to Kek Lok Si - one of the largest Buddhist temples in Asia. We pass by the snow-white pagoda, observe the prayers and rituals in the main hall, walk up to the Guanyin statue which is more than 30 meters tall. This top part of the temple offers wonderful views of Georgetown! We go down past the small houses of local residents, and head to a place famous for its laksa - a traditional soup. In different parts of the country, laksa is prepared from various ingredients - fish, chicken, oysters, coconut milk, fresh herbs. Asam laksa, common in Penang, is made of sardine soup, with the addition of rice noodles, sprouts and fresh mint. We will take you to the simple cafe which has been super popular with locals for more than a decade. 

Next, we head to the highest point of the island - Penang Hill, taking the longest cable car in Asia. We walk through the jungle at an altitude of 830 meters above sea level, enjoying cool air and views, and then walk down to the city. Time for traditional lok-lok dinner! This is the food that came from Fujian province in China. Visitors boil their own food, strung on sticks - from squid and oysters to dumplings, vegetables, tofu and sausages. We will visit the lok-lok in the Pulau Tikus area, which foreigners do not know about, but where crowds of locals gather every evening. It offers dozens of different kinds of food and ten fresh sauces.

Day 3

In the morning we will do a culinary master class with a local chef. First, we will go to the morning bazaar, where under his strict guidance we will select the necessary products and spices. And then we cook together and enjoy our meal. What kind of dish will it be? Surprise! (The whole event will take approximately 4-5 hours). Next, we head to a colorful tea shop where puerh tea is prepared in the old Chinese way - it is boiled in a large pot.

Energized, we go to the Teluk Bahang National Park in the north of the island (about 40 minutes on the way). The asphalt ends here, and we plunge into the wild jungle. We will walk for about an hour and a half, enjoying the sea views and the sounds of the wild rainforest. We reach Pantai Kerachut beach, where scientists are engaged in the protection and breeding of several species of sea turtles. We will see small turtles, bald eagles, monkeys and large water lizards, and relax on a wonderful deserted beach. 

We return to the city and enjoy delicious Indian butter chicken with nan flatbread. Next, you can visit local bars or take a walk through the historical center.

Day 4

Early in the morning we will try dim sum - a dietary cuisine that comes from South China. Dim sum in Cantonese language means “joy of the heart”. Most dishes are steamed with little or no spices, which preserves natural tastes. There are a lot of kinds of dim sums, from rice with chicken and shiitake mushrooms wrapped in lotus leaves, to siomai with pork, shrimp and crab meat. We will try at least 20 different kinds! Dim sum is served with Chinese teas - puerh, oolong or green tea. 

We will visit an unusual food museum, the Chinese clan temple of Khoo Kongsi, and the Indian Captain Keling mosque. For lunch we will try nasi kandar cuisine. Literally, this phrase means "rice on the carrying pole". Decades ago, food sellers distributed food in such a way - several boxes with rice and other dishes were fixed on carrying pole. Now all nasi kandars are stationary restaurants, where at lunchtime you can try up to 25 different dishes, something like a buffet. We will try many dishes from eggplant, potatoes, cauliflower, several types of chicken, lamb and beef, and even squid eggs. 

After lunch we drive to the airport and fly to Kuching - the capital of the state of Sarawak, located on the island of Borneo (2 hours flight). We check into a hotel on the Kuching riverfront.

Day 5

Kuching is a tranquil town on the river of the same name. Here, the headhunting customs of local tribes is mixed with the traditions of Indians and Chinese who arrived in Borneo 150-200 years ago. In the morning we will try kolo mee for breakfast. This is the noodle dish that Kuching is famous for. Next, we will go to Bako National Park, located on an isolated cape, which we will reach by boat. 

We will do a 3-hour trek to one of the beaches through the jungle, and see many carnivorous plants which attract insects with their nectar. Also in Bako we will definitely see wild animals: unique bearded pigs, gray macaques, and, of course, proboscis monkeys. These primates do not contact with people, eat only leaves, but if you are lucky, you can come close to them. All these animals live only on Borneo! 

After returning from the park, we head to the famous food court with seafood. Scallops, mussels, sea cucumber soup, shrimp and squid of various kinds, seaweed - we will try it all! 

Day 6

Early in the morning we leave for Kuching airport and fly to Miri (1 hour). Directly from the airport we will go to the fantastic Niah cave park (90 minutes on the way). Niah is a huge cave located in the deep jungle, where locals still collect bird nests for sale to China. Now this business is strictly limited so as not to damage the population of tens of thousands of swallows living in a giant cave. We will pass through the cave, get to the ceiling, make our way to the exit along the underground "blind" corridor 300 meters long, see the ancient cave paintings and the graves of the ancient inhabitants of the Niah area. At the beginning of the 19th century, people lived in the cave and led a simple life of hunter-gatherers. 

We will have lunch at a food court near the bus station, where they cook food according to recipes of the Iban tribe, the main ethnic group in the area. This cuisine consists mainly of vegetable dishes, rice and chicken, cooked in various ways. We can also buy salak, also known as snake fruit and rambutans. Iban men can be identified by tattoos that cover their torsos. One tattoo corresponds to an important event in life, for example, the birth of a child. 

We hurry back to Miri airport for an evening flight to Kota Kinabalu - the capital of Sabah (flight 1 hour) In the evening, before going to bed at a comfortable hotel, we will have time to drink freshly squeezed juices and visit the legendary Baba Nyonya restaurant, known for their wonderful Bak Kut Teh (Translated from the Hokkien language, it literally means "bone meat tea"). This is a dish of pork ribs, cooked in a secret mixture of many herbs.

Day 7

For breakfast we head to the Indonesian-Malay buffet which includes dozens of dishes to choose from - soups, fish, fried on banana leaves, asparagus, various types of meat cooked in curry and rendang spices. Here you can also try sambals - fresh sauces made from spices, herbs, chili and lime juice. 

We leave for the islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. This is a pleasant trip, 20-30 minutes on a speed boat. We will visit two islands, take a swim and relax on beautiful beaches. When we return, we will have time to relax before a serious gastronomic evening. 

The pearl of the evening Kota Kinabalu is Filipino Market, a bazaar where fresh seafood is prepared. Our dinner will include crabs, squids and lobsters. We will also visit a market of durians, and try different kinds of this unique fruit. You can also buy mangoes of several kinds, mangosteen and delicious pineapples.

Day 8

In the morning we will go to the Mari Mari cultural village (35 minutes on the way), where, with the help of local guides, we will get acquainted with the life and customs of the main nationalities of Sabah. We will try authentic food and alcohol and even participate in ritual dances. 

After returning to the city, we will have free time - you can spend it buying souvenirs, taking a trip to the islands or wandering in shopping malls. In the evening we will meet again to continue to enjoy seafood. Our dinner will include mollusks of various types, salads with raw fish, seaweed and friend fish. All this is prepared in the presence of the customer, while you enjoy juices or beer.

Day 9

In the morning we fly to Singapore, check into a hotel in the center and immediately go to the Hawker Chan restaurant, which recently received the prestigious Michelin star. Here we will try rice with duck meat and rice with pork. Although this food is prepared everywhere in Singapore, international experts have been fascinated by the secret ways that meat is cooked here! This is the first street food point in the world to receive a Michelin star! Since then, it turned into a medium-sized restaurant, where you have to wait in line. 

Let`s head to the legendary Chinatown Complex food court, where stalls have been operating since 1965. Here you must definitely try the char kway tiao, a dish of flat raw noodles with shrimp, oysters, soya sprouts, mint, meat and eggs. Full and happy, we explore Chinatown, visiting the Temple of the Tooth Relic, the oldest Hindu temple of Sri Mariamman in Singapore, and buy the most appropriate souvenirs. We walk to the Museum of Singapore on foot to learn more about the history of this unique country. Next, we head to the roof of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel to enjoy the wonderful sunset and views of Singapore. Two of the most famous daily light shows await later in the evening. 

Dinner at the famous Lau Pa Sat food court. Try omelet with oysters, or different types of rice with chicken and squid. Those who wish can continue the program at the highest bar in Singapore - 1 Altitude, or go to the durian night market. 

Day 10

Breakfast at Singapore's largest food court on 51 Old Airport road. It boasts about 120 food outlets, but we recommend to try black chicken and ginseng soup, classic curry and hokkien mee soups. 

We leave for the zoo - one of the most interesting places in Singapore. There are no fences and nets that separate animals from visitors. We will see orangutans and other primates from all over the world,  watch funny pandas, polar bear bathing and playful penguins. For lunch we head to the Indian district. We will try traditional South Indian dishes served on banana leaves. Indian food should be understood by touch, so we eat only with our hands! 

Free time before dinner. Take a walk in the center to visit futuristic Gardens by the bay, or take time to rest. We plan to spend the evening in a buffet of fresh seafood. This dinner is a gift from My name is Travel!

Day 11

Jewel shopping center

Flight home. If you have an evening flight, you can continue to enjoy Singapore. In any case, we recommend that you go to the airport 3-4 hours before departure to visit the fantastic Jewel shopping center - Singapore's new pride.

This trip is of easy physical grade. We will take long walks in big cities and simple walks in three national parks. The trip includes five short flights and short trips by buses and motor boats. Accommodation in double/twin rooms of 4 star hotels. This is a culinary trip, the main focus is on getting to know all the cuisines common in Malaysia and Singapore. Historical and natural attractions are also present, but as a background.
